CLIENT: H+H ARCHITECTS / GNOWANGERUP ABORIGINAL CORPORATION | INDUSTRY: CULTURAL HERITAGE | SERVICES: INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE
"This Centre is the result of many people’s vision and effort over many years. This is a place where the history of local Noongar people is shared and looked after. The exhibition brings together many different voices to tell the history of what happened to Aboriginal people here in Gnowangerup. The history that is told here is of a strong culture which has survived against all odds. There are many other voices with stories to tell. This Centre aims to be a place where these stories can continue to be shared and where culture can continue to strengthen." Gnowangerup Aboriginal Corporation
This project involved consultation with the local Noongar community over an extensive period, and the stories and photographs gathered through this consultation, along with research of historic records, formed the basis of the exhibition. dcdesign was tasked with collating this extensive archive of images and historical information to visually communicate the importance of the local history and stories.
The brief included the design of interpretive panels and signage to be exhibited in the multi-room space inside the historic building, interpretive signage as part of the exterior landscaping, and external welcome and way-finding signage for the site. A visual style was developed that draws from by the raw, makeshift building materials of the original mission, with wooden packing crates, corrugated iron and recyled timber incorporated into the design of the exhibition space.
